Police sources said that the leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League may make attempts to deteriorate the law and order situation in the country. For this, they are trying to organize. Out of fear, the police headquarters has instructed the district police superintendents to follow their movements. They have been asked to collect their lists from all police stations and send them to the headquarters. The police headquarters said that the Chhatra League is a banned organization. All their activities are punishable offenses according to the law.
When asked, Assistant Inspector General (Spokesperson) of the Police Headquarters, Enamul Haque Sagar, said that keeping track of the accused in the case is a regular part of case supervision. However, the district police superintendents can give details about the Chhatra League list letter.
After the Awami League government fell on August 5 last year in the student uprising, Chhatra League leaders and activists have been in hiding. Some have been arrested. On October 23 last year, the interim government banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League. At the same time, the Chhatra League was listed as a banned entity. During the anti-discrimination student movement, thousands of leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations have been accused in numerous cases across the country on various charges including murder, attempted murder, and assault. Many leaders of the party, including more than 30 former ministers and former members of parliament, have been arrested. But except for a handful of them, Chhatra League leaders have not been arrested.
Police sources say that there is intelligence information that Chhatra League leaders and activists who are in hiding are organizing and trying to create an unstable situation in the country. Therefore, they need to be brought under the law.
After the police headquarters issued instructions to prepare a list of Chhatra League leaders and activists, letters have been sent from the district police superintendent’s office to police stations. In one such letter sent by fax and e-mail, it is seen that the officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station has been instructed to collect five types of information about Chhatra League leaders at the police station level. There is a table in it asking for the full name and identity of the Chhatra League leader of the police station branch, national identity card number, passport number (if any), political identity and position in the organization, details of past and present activities, and information on GD or case if any.
When asked about the progress in the process of preparing the list of Chhatra League leaders and activists, Narayanganj District Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumder told Ajker Patrika on Saturday that the list of leaders and activists of banned organizations has been prepared. Chhatra League is also among these organizations.
A police superintendent of Chittagong range, who did not want to be named, said that information about Chhatra League leaders is being collected as per the instructions. However, this is not part of any repression, but is being done in the interest of security.
According to crime analysts, the police are monitoring the possibility of restructuring the organization or creating an alternative force after the banning of Chhatra League. Therefore, the movements of Chhatra League leaders have been kept under surveillance in advance due to the fear of instability in the country’s political situation.
When asked, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Nurul Huda told Ajker Patrika, “If someone poses a threat to the state, the police will make a list and take action – it is very natural. This is applicable not only for any party, but for any banned organization.
